The Streaming Landscape in 2026

Anime streaming is substantially consolidated compared to the fragmented landscape of the early 2010s. A handful of major platforms now dominate legal streaming globally, though the gap between simulcast availability and complete catalogue coverage still leaves significant content effectively inaccessible through legal means in many markets. The largest legal platforms together cover the majority of current seasonal output.

Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll is the dominant anime streaming platform globally — the result of mergers and acquisitions combining the former Crunchyroll, Funimation, and VRV libraries. It offers the broadest catalogue of current seasonal anime with simulcast (same-day Japan release) on the vast majority of major titles. Premium subscription is required for most content (free tier exists with ads and limited catalogue). The platform has had technical and content criticism since its consolidation but remains the most comprehensive single-platform option for current anime.

HiDive

HiDive focuses on a more curated catalogue with particular strength in titles not on Crunchyroll, older library titles, and some exclusive licences. Its subscription is modestly priced and it is a strong complement to Crunchyroll rather than a replacement. Adult content (age-gated ecchi and mature content) availability is better on HiDive than on Crunchyroll for some titles.

Netflix and Other Platforms

Netflix has invested significantly in anime through original productions and licensing, producing some major series (Arcane crosses the animation boundary, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Castlevania). Its anime catalogue is inconsistent — strong in its originals and specific exclusive licences, weak in general coverage of seasonal releases. Amazon Prime Video has similar characteristics. Disney+ carries Star Wars and MCU animated content relevant to cosplay communities but is not an anime-first platform.
