Unlike costume-based cosplay where the costume covers the body, body paint cosplay makes the body the canvas. The results can be extraordinary — complete character transformations that are simultaneously costume and naked human form. It is both technically demanding and visually spectacular when done well.

Professional body paint comes in several forms: Alcohol-activated (PAX paints) are very durable and long-wearing; they require special palettes and application tools but provide the most convincing results. Water-activated body paints (Mehron Paradise, Ben Nye) are easier to use but less durable and more prone to smearing. Airbrush body paint creates the smoothest, most even coverage and is standard for professional body paint work. Finishing sealers (Ben Nye Final Seal) significantly improve durability of any body paint application.

Application Time

Full body paint cosplay is extremely time-intensive — complete body coverage for a complex character typically takes 4–8 hours of application time and is best done by a professional body paint artist or with an experienced assistant. Partial body paint (face and upper body only) is more manageable solo. Planning for the time required is essential — arriving at a convention in body paint requires either applying on-site or travelling immediately after application.

Body paint naturally intersects with adult content — it is revealing by definition and creates spectacular visual results for photography. Adult body paint cosplay has a large professional and semi-professional community.
