Comics and Cosplay: The Origin Story
Comic book characters were among the very first cosplayed — the 1939 World Science Fiction Convention that launched cosplay history had a strong pulp sci-fi and superhero aesthetic. The modern superhero film era (beginning with X-Men in 2000 and accelerating enormously with the MCU from 2008) created a new wave of comic cosplay that brought millions of new people to the practice. Comic-Con International in San Diego became the world's premier cosplay event largely on the strength of superhero content.
The MCU Cosplay Wave
The Marvel Cinematic Universe created the largest sustained cosplay wave in convention history. Iron Man's armour, Black Widow's suit, Spider-Man in multiple variants, Thor, Captain America, and the rest of the Avengers have been cosplayed continuously since their film introductions. Characters introduced later — Black Panther, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy — each created their own cosplay communities. The MCU aesthetic also standardised a certain quality expectation for superhero cosplay.
DC and Independent Comics
DC characters have a longer cosplay history than Marvel (the 1966 Batman TV series inspired very early convention cosplay). Batman and Joker remain perennial top cosplays. Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn (particularly after the Suicide Squad film), and Superman are classics. Independent comics have produced significant cosplay communities too — Saga, Saga, TMNT, and the cast of various IDW and Image titles all have dedicated practitioners.
Harley Quinn: The Modern Cosplay Phenomenon
Harley Quinn deserves specific mention as perhaps the most-cosplayed comic book character of the 2010s. The combination of her recognisable design, the 2016 Suicide Squad film's revealing interpretation, and her character's combination of menace and vulnerability created enormous cosplay appeal. Her multiple visual interpretations (classic jester suit, Suicide Squad shorts, Birds of Prey aesthetic) give cosplayers multiple entry points. She has a massive adult cosplay community.
