The fandom emerged from science fiction fan communities in the 1980s and has developed into a substantial subculture with dedicated conventions, a rich art and creative writing tradition, and a distinctive costuming practice (fursuits). It is both a creative community and, for many members, an identity community built around a personal anthropomorphic animal character ("fursona").

Fursuits: The Costuming Tradition

Fursuits are full-body animal character costumes — the furry community's equivalent of cosplay. They range from partial suits (head, hands, feet, and tail only) to full-body suits covering the entire performer. High-quality fursuits are extraordinary craftsmanship achievements, typically custom-built by specialist makers over many months, and can cost $1,500–$10,000+ for full suits. Top fursuit makers have waitlists of 1–2 years. The quality at major conventions like Further Confusion and Midwest FurFest is genuinely spectacular.

Furry Art and Creative Culture

The furry fandom has produced an enormous body of creative work — visual art, fiction writing, music, and animation. Furry artists are among the most commercially successful independent creators in online art markets. The fandom is a significant patron community for digital artists, with commissioned character art (both SFW and adult) being the primary transaction type. Adult furry art (referred to as "yiff") represents a significant commercial segment within the broader art commission market.

Furry Culture and Mainstream

Furry culture has experienced significant mainstreaming in recent years — the aesthetic sensibility of anthropomorphic character design has been embraced in mainstream animation, advertising, and fashion.
