What Makes JRPGs a Cultural Force
Japanese RPGs (JRPGs) have produced some of gaming's most emotionally significant experiences and most beloved characters. The genre's emphasis on story, character development, and visual aesthetic creates the conditions for deep fan attachment that drives cosplay, fan art, and community formation at an intensity rarely matched in other gaming genres. Final Fantasy VII alone has produced continuous cultural impact since 1997 through to its ongoing Remake series.
Final Fantasy: The Giant
Final Fantasy is the most culturally significant JRPG franchise globally — 16 mainline entries plus numerous spin-offs spanning 35+ years. Each game is largely self-contained with new characters and world, meaning each entry creates its own fan community. FF7 (Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Sephiroth) has the largest and most enduring cosplay following. FF14 Online has an enormous active player community that creates cosplay of both official characters and player character builds. FF10's Tidus and Yuna, FF6's cast, and FF9's characters all have passionate cosplay communities.
Persona: The Modern Cultural Phenomenon
Persona 5 (2016) created perhaps the largest new JRPG cosplay wave of its decade — the Phantom Thieves' distinctive outfits, Joker's striking design, and the stylish aesthetic of the game produced immediate and enormous cosplay response. The Persona series' blend of slice-of-life school settings with Jungian mythology and monster-catching creates character dynamics with strong fan attachment. Adult Persona cosplay communities are significant, particularly around the female characters' designs.
Other Major JRPG Fandoms
Dragon Quest has a multigenerational Japanese fandom and growing Western presence. Fire Emblem's ensemble casts produce distinctive character designs popular in cosplay. Tales Of series has a dedicated Western cosplay community. Xenoblade Chronicles, Nier:Automata, and Chrono Trigger all have devoted cosplay communities. Genshin Impact, while Chinese-developed, follows JRPG conventions and has produced one of the largest cosplay waves of the 2020s.
