Demographic Categories
Japanese media uses demographic categories as primary genre classifications — they indicate the intended audience more than the content type. Shonen (young male audience): action, friendship, growing stronger — Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen. Shojo (young female audience): romance, relationships, emotional development — Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket, Skip and Loafer, Kaguya-sama. Seinen (adult male audience): more mature themes, darker stories, complexity — Berserk, Vinland Saga, Mushishi, Chainsaw Man (technically shonen but reads seinen). Josei (adult female audience): mature romance and relationships — Nana, Paradise Kiss, Chihayafuru.
Content Genres
Isekai ("another world"): a character transported to a fantasy world, usually as an overpowered protagonist — Re:Zero, Sword Art Online, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Konosuba. Currently the most commercially dominant anime subgenre. Mecha: giant robots — Gundam franchise, Evangelion, Darling in the FranXX. Magical girl: young women with magical powers fighting evil — Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, Precure. Slice of life: everyday life without significant supernatural or action elements — K-On!, Barakamon, Laid-Back Camp. Sports: competitive sports drama — Haikyuu!!, Yuri!!! on Ice, Kuroko's Basketball.
Adult-Adjacent Genres
Ecchi: sexually suggestive content without explicit acts. Harem: protagonist surrounded by romantic interests. Romance with fanservice: romantic comedies with regular suggestive elements. These categories overlap significantly and most ecchi series also fit harem or romance categories. The explicit adult category (hentai) is a separate publishing and streaming ecosystem from mainstream anime.
